Description
The Cheverell teak bench is a delightfully ornate curved bench with gently shaped back, subtle curved three seats adorned by four decorative finials, designed by acclaimed garden designer and architect Michael Balston. With its formal lines and elegant structure this is the perfect teak bench to complement a beautiful corner garden design.
Michael Balston studied architecture at Cambridge University, qualifying as an architect in the early 1970s. He then qualified further as a landscape architect and worked on several public buildings projects in the UK and Saudi Arabia.
From 1978, he focused on private gardens and since moving to Wiltshire in 1983, he has run his own practice, operating from converted farm buildings within a large garden that he has created from scratch.
For 28 years, Balston Agius Ltd, formally Balston & Company, has developed significant experience in most aspects of landscape design and management. The core garden projects continue, ranging from roof gardens to large estates. There is also a substantial portfolio of prominent international urban design projects, including housing, commercial landscapes and public open spaces.
Until a recent move, the gardens created at his own home in Wiltshire were his working laboratory, and have been widely featured in the gardening press.
Michael Balston has been a member of the Council of the RHS for almost 10 years. He is Chairman of the Show Gardens Committee, on the Shows Committee and the Gardens Committee. He has been much involved in Shows development and the Master Planning of the Society’s 4 gardens.
Michael has long been associated with Europa Nostra and is currently on the Europa Nostra Landscape Working Group.
Besides writing for magazines, Michael Balston has written books including the influential The Well Furnished Garden. More recently Ten Landscapes – Michael Balston edited by James Grayson Trulove featured his design work. Michael also lectures on Garden Design and on RHS matters both in the UK and internationally.
