Teak Memorial Benches

Our beautifully durable teak memorial benches are a long-lasting, easily maintained option for commemorating a life, memory or special place. Each teak bench has ample space for an engraving or memorial plaque.

A memorial bench needs to do more than look good on delivery day. It has to hold its structure and its purpose for decades, wherever it stands. Every teak memorial bench we build reflects our approach to teak furniture: built to last, personalised to suit, and delivered ready to place in a private garden, a churchyard, or a public space.

Choosing a memorial bench means choosing a lasting place to sit, remember and reflect, and one that will still be standing for the years ahead. Every bench is built from carefully selected Grade A heartwood teak, the densest, most oil-rich part of the tree. Because the timber's natural oils protect it against water, insects and rot, it will stand outdoors through decades of British winters without oil, sealant or varnish. Over time it silvers to a soft, natural grey, settling gently into its surroundings, whether that's a favourite corner of the garden, a quiet spot on the lawn or a view someone loved.

Why Teak for a Memorial Bench

A memorial bench has a harder job than most garden furniture. It needs to stand outdoors year-round and still look right decades later.

Teak manages this without treatment. Our benches use heartwood, the dense centre of a mature tree, where natural oils and silica are most concentrated, providing resistance to rot, insects, and weather without the need for oil, sealant, or varnish. Grade A teak isn't an officially recognised or regulated grade, and the classification is applied loosely across the industry; even our own suppliers have seen timber sold as Grade A that falls well short of the standard.

We've worked with the same trusted suppliers for over 20 years and hold every batch to a quality standard above the trade average, so our Grade A heartwood teak is genuinely free of knots and splits. Our chairman's own bench, bought over half a century ago, still stands outside our showroom today, untouched by furniture oil and as solid as the day it was made.

Teak's smooth, close-grained surface is also what allows it to hold a carved inscription cleanly, rather than letting the letters blur as the wood ages.

Our Bench Designs

Most benches in the range have room for an inscription or a plaque. A few are built specifically with commemorative use in mind, with heavier construction for public settings.

Design Seats Character
York Available in three sizes Wide horizontal crest rail, curved slatted back and seat, flat round end arms, 7cm squared legs and corner blocks
Salisbury Up to 5 Traditional profile with a wide horizontal crest rail, curved seat and curved arms
Hereford See specification Curved slatted back and curved seat, built for heavier use

Carved Inscriptions and Plaques

There are three ways to personalise a bench, and they suit different things.

Hand Carved Inscription

Carved directly into the teak by hand by a local carpenter. It's the most traditional option, and it reads as part of the bench rather than an addition to it. Space is limited, so most inscriptions are kept to a name and a date, and because carving is priced per letter, shorter wording also helps keep costs down.

CNC Machine Carved Inscription

Available in-house on selected memorial benches only, which arrive flat-packed to fit our CNC machine and are assembled here afterwards. Wording depends on the length of the back rail you choose and is kept to a minimum, typically a name, a date, and perhaps a short phrase such as 'In loving memory of'.

Engraved Brass Plaque

A brass plaque, engraved with up to 140 characters and secured to the back panel of the bench. Fewer words tend to read better on a plaque this size, so treat 140 characters as a limit rather than a target.

Our teak bench engraving page covers the options in full. Please note that our plaques can only be fitted to Chic Teak benches, and that our standard 14 day delivery may take longer where a bench is being personalised.

If you are still deciding what the inscription should say, our guide to memorial bench wording sets out how to work within the character limit.

Benches for Public and Private Places

Our memorial benches stand in private gardens and on terraces as well as in parks, churchyards, schools and other public places. We have supplied commemorative benches to the MCC at Lord's, to the National Trust and to Battersea Park.

If you are placing a bench somewhere public, permission is usually needed from the landowner, the parish or district council or the parochial church council, and requirements vary between authorities. It is worth confirming before you order. We can also supply a bench security kit for benches in public locations.

Please note that our ten year guarantee covers furniture in domestic use. It does not extend to benches in commercial or public settings, and plaques and non-teak fittings are not covered.

Delivered and Positioned by Our Own Team

A memorial bench should not arrive in a box on a driveway. Ours are delivered fully assembled in our own vans by our own staff and placed exactly where you want them to stand. Delivery is free on orders over £250 to UK mainland postcodes, and some remote postcodes carry a surcharge.

If you would like to see the designs in person, our Basingstoke showroom is open by appointment. Book a showroom appointment, or call us today to discuss any of it before ordering, including the wording.

Memorial Bench: FAQs

How long does a teak memorial bench last?

Grade A heartwood teak will last for decades outdoors with no treatment. Our chairman's first bench is over half a century old and still in daily use, having never been oiled. Teak's natural oils protect it from rot, moisture, and insects without any intervention.

How many characters can I have on a memorial bench plaque?

Up to 140 characters on a brass plaque, secured to the back panel of the bench, though fewer words tend to read better. A hand-carved inscription is priced per letter and generally kept to a name and date, while CNC carving is available only on selected memorial benches, with wording kept minimal.

Should I choose a carved inscription or a plaque?

A carved inscription reads as part of the bench and is the more traditional choice. A plaque is easier to specify, takes a longer message within the character limit and available in brass. Both are applied to the same benches.

Do I need permission to place a memorial bench in a park?

Usually, yes. Permission normally comes from the landowner, the parish or district council or the parochial church council, and requirements vary by authority. Please confirm before ordering, as we are not able to arrange permissions on your behalf.

Can any of your benches be used as a memorial bench?

Most benches in our range have space for an inscription or a plaque. The York, Salisbury and Hereford designs are built with heavier construction, which suits public settings and heavier use.

How long does a personalised bench take to arrive?

Our standard delivery is normally within 14 days subject to stock, though personalisation can extend that. We will confirm timings with you when you order.
